How to Price Etsy Products for Real Profit

The pricing mistake almost every new Etsy seller makes — and the simple formula that fixes it.

You priced your product at $24 because "that feels fair." Then Etsy took its cut, materials and shipping ate the rest, and you made $4 for an hour of work. Sound familiar? Pricing by feeling is the #1 reason talented sellers burn out. Pricing by math is the fix — and the math is simpler than you think.

Know your true costs first

Most sellers undercount. Your real cost per item includes:

If that list surprised you, you're not alone. Undercounted costs are the silent profit killer.

The pricing formula

Price = (materials + labor + overhead) ÷ (1 − fee rate − profit margin)

In plain English: add up your costs, then divide by what's left after fees and your target margin. Want a 40% margin with ~15% total fees? Divide your costs by 0.45. $12 in costs → $26.67 → price at $27.

That 40% margin isn't greed — it's what funds slow months, returns, ads, and actually paying yourself.

Test before you commit

Run your candidate price through our Etsy profit calculator — it breaks down every fee and shows your true margin per sale. If the margin is under 20%, the price is too low. Adjust until you're at 30%+.

Quick answers

What profit margin should Etsy sellers target?

30–50% is healthy for most handmade products. Under 20% is dangerously thin — one return or ad click can erase it.

Should I offer free shipping?

Only if you've baked the full shipping cost into the price. "Free shipping" that you absorb is just a pay cut with better marketing.

How do Offsite Ads affect pricing?

Etsy can take 12–15% extra on sales from offsite ads. If you're in the program, price with that fee included or your best sellers become your worst margins.
