Audible (owned by Amazon) makes one thing very clear on its own help pages: you cannot cancel from the mobile app. The desktop path below is the official one — and there is one thing to do before you click anything.
Step 0: Spend your credits first
This is the step most people miss. Unused membership credits generally expire when your membership ends (12 months after issue or at membership end, whichever comes first). Audiobooks you buy with credits stay in your library forever — so spend every credit before cancelling. The one exception: credits on Apple/Google-billed memberships currently do not expire on cancel.
How to cancel on the Audible website
- Go to audible.com on a computer (or use “Desktop site” mode in your mobile browser) and sign in with your Amazon account.
- Select your name in the top navigation → Membership details (sometimes labelled Account details).
- Click the Cancel membership link.
- Work through the “are you sure?” screens — Audible will offer discounts or a pause — until you reach Confirm cancellation.
- Save the confirmation email and check that your Membership details page reflects the change.
Official instructions: help.audible.com → “Cancel membership.”
If Apple or Google bills you
Audible’s website cannot stop app-store billing. Cancel in Settings → your name → Subscriptions (iPhone) or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions (Android) instead.
Traps to watch for
- The credits trap (above) — the single most expensive Audible mistake. A forgotten credit is a forgotten audiobook you paid for.
- The retention maze. Expect several offer screens (discounted months, a free credit, a pause). None of them block cancellation — keep clicking through to the final confirmation.
- Deleting the app. Audible states this plainly: deleting the app does not cancel the membership.
What happens after you cancel
Every audiobook you purchased — with credits or a card — stays in your library permanently. You can still listen to all of them. You just stop receiving new monthly credits. If you only need a break, Audible’s pause option (1–3 months, no charge, credits kept) is offered during the cancel flow.
Quick answers
Do I keep my audiobooks after cancelling?
Yes — every title you bought stays in your library forever. Only the monthly credits stop.
What happens to unused credits?
On directly-billed memberships they generally expire when the membership ends. Spend them first — credits on Apple/Google-billed plans are the exception.
Can I pause instead of cancelling?
Yes. Audible offers a 1–3 month pause with no charge — your library and credits wait for you.
