Spotify buries its cancel button one level deeper than you would expect: under “Change plan.” Follow the right path for how you subscribed, and the whole thing takes two minutes.
Step 1: Find out who bills you
Log in at spotify.com and open your Account page. Under Manage your plan, check the Payment section. If it names Apple, Google Play, or a phone carrier, cancel with them (steps below) — Spotify cannot stop those charges.
Step 2: Cancel a directly-billed plan
- Log in at spotify.com in a browser — not the app.
- Go to Account → Manage your plan → Change plan.
- Scroll all the way down to the Spotify Free section and click Cancel Premium.
- Confirm. Check that the page now shows an end date instead of a renewal date.
If Apple or Google bills you
- iPhone/iPad: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Spotify → Cancel Subscription.
- Android: Play Store → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Spotify → Cancel.
Traps to watch for
- It cannot be done in the Spotify app. There is no cancel button there at all. Deleting the app changes nothing about billing.
- The retention offer. Spotify often surfaces an unadvertised discount (commonly around 50% off for a few months) or suggests pausing. Genuinely consider it if price is the issue — otherwise click through.
- Family and Duo plans: only the plan manager can cancel. If you are a member, the same steps only remove you from the plan — the manager keeps paying until they cancel.
What happens after you cancel
Premium stays active until your next billing date, then the account drops to the free tier: ads between songs and shuffle-only play on mobile. Your playlists and saved music stay on the account.
Quick answers
Do I lose my playlists if I cancel?
No. Playlists, saved albums, and followers all stay on your account — you just lose the Premium features.
Will I get a refund for the unused days?
No. Premium is prepaid with no partial-month refunds — but you keep Premium until the billing date.
I cancelled as a Family member but the charge continues?
Leaving a Family or Duo plan only removes you. The plan manager must cancel for billing to stop — ask them to do it.
