Are your Etsy Ads actually making money?
Etsy shows you revenue from ads — flattering, but incomplete. True profit is revenue − ad spend − product costs − Etsy fees. A 3× ROAS sounds great until costs eat it down to pennies.
Rule of thumb: below 1× you are donating money to Etsy. Around 2–3× you are treading water. At 4× and up with costs covered, ads are genuinely working — that is when scaling makes sense.
After product costs and Etsy fees, 4× or higher is genuinely healthy. 2–3× is break-even-ish — fine for visibility, not for profit. Under 1×, pause immediately.
Etsy credits a sale to ads if the buyer clicked your ad and purchased within 30 days. Take attribution with a grain of salt — some of those buyers would have found you anyway.
Etsy Ads are pay-per-click ads you control inside Etsy. Offsite ads are Etsy advertising your listings on Google etc., and you only pay the 12–15% fee when they drive a sale.
When ROAS stays under 1× after a fair test ($50–100 spend), or when the same budget would earn more as listing improvements. Ads amplify listings — they don't fix bad ones.
